Chasing The Tanks

During the day the 11 th Armored Division started passing through the Regiment's zone. Enemy resistance melted and practically disappeared. At 1215 all three Battalions were ordered to hold a line from Wurrich to Lauzenhausen by dark to accomplish this one company of both the 2nd and 3rd Battalions were motorized. Co. I moved out of Enkirch on the motor march to Lotzenburn, arriving at approximately 2100. Lotzenburn was occupied by parts of the 11th Armored and a Chemical Mortar Battalion. Further orders were issued at this time by 3rd Battalion to continue the move by motor and take the town of Wahlinau, about 15 kilometers away. While the company was being reorganized in order to entruck, Capt. Donald L. Robertson, seeking information, asked the 11th Armored for any data they knew about the objective. He was told that one company of the 11 th Armored had hit this town at approximately 1300 that afternoon, had engaged in a heavy fire fight with approximately 300 SS troops and sustained several casualties in both equipment and men. It finally had to withdraw back to Lotzenburn. Because of this, Capt. Robertson decided to move by truck to a point approximately a mile from the edge of Wahlinau where the company would detruck and move in on foot As the convoy moved out of Lotzenburn, a strange vehicle was spotted attached to the end of the column by Lt. Harmon. To investigate, a patrol of two bazooka teams and four riflemen was hastily organized and placed in a strategic spot for an ambush. The motor officer was instructed to halt the convoy at the point where the "strange" vehicle would come abreast of the ambush.
